From the Sunday Mail: ARBROATH gaffer Paul Sheerin congratulated Cowdenbeath on winning the Second Division but insisted, ‘You haven’t seen the back of us yet.’
The Angus side guaranteed second spot with a scrappy draw at Cliftonhill and will now try to join the Blue Brazil in the First Division via the play-offs.
Sheerin said: “Cowdenbeath are worthy champions and while I’d like to think we pushed them all the way, we came up a bit short in the end.
“But our dreams of playing First Division football next season are anything but dead, although we will have to find the spark that has been missing for the last few weeks.
“Back-to-back promotions would be an incredible feat for this club. When you get so close you get greedy but there is a lot of hard work still to do.”
Last season’s promoted sides entered the game at opposite ends of the table but there was a real lack of urgency in the opening 20 minutes.
It was half an hour before Rovers had a shot on target but Darren Hill pushed Robert Love’s drive round the post.
The home side grabbed a deserved lead four minutes after the break when Love sprung Arbroath’s offside trap and coolly slotted beyond Hill.
John Gemmell then prevented his own side doubling their advantage five minutes later when he blocked a goal-bound Scott Chaplain header on the line.
And it proved costly as Arbroath broke up the other end and sub Lee Sibanda fired home from a Steven Doris cutback.
Craig Wedderburn then blocked a Chaplain shot and Rovers keeper Derek Gaston saved a late Doris drive as both sides chased a winner.
The draw leaves Albion one point ahead of second-bottom Forfar, with the sides meeting at Station Park next Saturday Rovers boss Paul Martin said: “I thought we had the better chances so I’m disappointed not to get all three points.
“Our fate is now in our own hands and if we stay up it would be the first time the club has spent two successive years outside the Third Division.”
