Another goalless Gayfield afternoon but a deserved draw

Honours finished even at Gayfield as ARBROATH and Stranraer looked as if they were saving themselves for their forthcoming play-off ties. Manager John McGlashan was absent reportedly watching Cowden. A chance for a starting place for Brian Scott, missing for a few weeks, Scott Morrison and Terry Masson.

Windy conditions made football a little tricky and, while there was nothing at stake, the contest was even.

A dreary goalless draw  but, with both teams involved in the forthcoming Division Two play-offs, it was perhaps unsurprising.

Paul Lunan was denied by the goalkeeper for Arbroath, while Darren Gribben had a header cleared off the line for Stranraer.

The first half was a poor affair, with neither teams able to create any real chances, although the second-half brought a more positive display from the home side. There were no shots on target from either side in the first half, with the Blues' Gregory Tade and Andrew Gibson firing high and wide during rare forays forward, while at the other end Bryan Scott looked liveliest for the Lichties.

Immediately after the restart Paul Tosh missed the game's best chance when he failed to connect with a Scott cross. Scott Black made the first save of the game five minutes later when he denied Paul Lunan after fine build up play involving Tosh and Scott. Tosh then spurned another chance when he rounded Black, but dragged himself too wide for a decent shot on goal.

Home keeper Scott Morrison produced a couple of brilliant stops late on—notably from Ian Cashmore—to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.

Arbroath assistant boss Robbie Raeside said injuries to Paul Tosh and Alan Campbell had marred a "decent performance." They both had to come off after suffering knocks, so that might be a slight concern for Wednesday," he said. "Otherwise it was a decent performance against a good side. "The strong wind dominated things in the first half, but at the start of the second half we created some good chances and were unlucky not to score.

"The injuries changed things a little, we had to change our system and Stranraer played well for the last 20 minutes when we were up against it a bit. "Saying that, I was pleased we were able to give young Joe Pepper his first team debut and he coped really well, clearing one dangerous effort off the line towards the end."
