Late goal reverse after sterling Arbroath performance

Ayr soared to the top of the Second Division table after an impressive second-half fight-back snatched a dramatic 2-1 win over Arbroath. But we were in no way outclassed and matched the home side much of the way, except at the end

With Bryan Scott out injured Andy Reilly was given a starting place up front. Wright replaced him with Masson and towards the end Paul Tosh coming on as subs. A crowd of over 1,300 was present despite real poor weather

Kevin McMullan gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half as United struggled to cope with the pace of the game.

The hosts came to life after the break and a moment of magic from Ryan Stevenson brought them level after 62 minutes. The midfielder ran from his own half and held off three defenders before firing home a sensational goal.

Ayr piled on the pressure in search of a winner, but Arbroath looked like holding out as the clock ticked down.

However, with six minutes left Bryan Prunty fired home from 12 yards after a great pass from substitute David Gormley to send the home fans wild

According to Mel Hutchwright on P&B
"Bit of a sickener losing to a late goal, but I'm far from despondent at the performance.

Things could have turned out differently had Raeside connected properly with the free header he had when we were one up, but unfortunately it was a bit of a tame effort. It was frustrating to concede the equaliser after Ayr broke up the park from what was probably our period of most sustained pressure, but it was admittedly a good finish. Ayr seemed to spring to life a bit after that and we were on the back foot at times, and I wasn't too surprised when they scored the winner with another well taken goal. We did have one or two opportunities to equalise right at the death, but unfortunately it wasn't to be.

It was a decent, battling performance from us though which, if replicated throughout the season, is likely to earn us valuable points in tough away matches like these".
